Dear Parents,
Apples, apples, fell from the tree.
_____________ate them, 1,2,3!
We substitute each student’s name card in the blank and then read it together. The children love this and it is good practice for name recognition and following along with reading readiness skills.
Some of what we learned in Kindergarten this week…
-Introduced the letters M, N, R, and H.
-sight words for the week: the, go
-Introduced the students to the Language Arts program “Core 5”. They are learning phonemic awareness, sight words, and vocabulary.
-used our 5 senses: sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch by going in the garden!
-We began our unit on composing/decomposing numbers 1-5, learning different ways to make numbers, i.e. 1+4=5, 3+2= 5, 5+0=5, etc.
-went to the Makerspace and visited 7 New Wonders of the world! We saw the Taj Mahal in India, the Great Wall of China, the Colosseum in Rome, Chichen-Itza in Mexico, Petra in Jordan, Rio de Janeiro in Brazil and Machu Picchu in the Andes Mountains! We also visited Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, Yosemite (climbed El Capitan), and Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii. We even had time to see the humpback whales and spinner dolphins in the ocean! Thanks to Virtual Reality to visit all these places! The students LOVED it!
Comments:
-Sharing has gone well this week! Thank you for your help in preparing your child to say three things about their “story” share.
-A parent volunteer is needed to check out books every other Monday. If you could help with this please let me know! Thank you.

Dear Parents,
Baa, baa, black sheep, have you any wool?
Yes sir, yes sir, three bags full.
One for the master, and one for the dame.
And one for the little boy who lived down the lane.
Some of what we learned in Kindergarten this week:
-looked for the rhyming words in the poem above.
-sight words of the week were am, at, in.
-letters for the week were Tt, Ff, Bb.
--introduced the words “hidden partner” in math. We have been talking about numbers 0-5 and how different numbers added together will be a new number. For the number 5, if we have 3 bears, the “hidden partner” is the number 2.
-read the book Chrysanthemum. Talked about being kind and learned the words wilted, dreadful, perfect. Also, put the story in sequential order. Please have your child retell the story to you using the pictures for clues.
-read the book the dot by Peter Reynolds. We made our “mark” by painting pictures and using our imagination.

-Next week we are starting sharing. For sharing this year the children will share a story. The story can be about anything they know about or anything that has happened to them and should be about 3-5 sentences long. Please help them have a beginning, middle, and end to their story. I will stamp their hand as a reminder that it is their sharing the next day of school.
-Next week we will be starting to take books home for homework. If you volunteered to help with the checkout I would like to start parent volunteers the week of September 30th. I will send home a volunteer calendar if you signed up.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Dear Parents,
Some of the things we did in Kindergarten this week…
-introduced the sound of the letter “Aa” and “Oo”.
-we did centers where we worked with tangrams, playdough, puzzles, and listening to a story. We are working on knowing the routines of centers.
-we read the book Freight Trains by Donald Crews. We are becoming “writers” and did a writing workshop where we drew pictures about something that we knew a lot about and then shared the pictures with the class.
-in math we learned about things that are the same but different. We are using our “I spy” eyes to see how things are the same and how they are different.
-read the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. We discussed what happened in the story and related the story to a time when we got hurt.
-sequenced the story of Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and retold the story to a friend.
-did a poetry book for the poem of the week to help us start reading words! Please have your child read the book to you and sing you the song!
-we had a GREAT week!
Comments:
-Thank you to all who came to Back to School night! It was wonderful to see so many parents there!
-No school Friday, August 30th--it is a Staff Development Day for teachers.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Dear Parents,
Today is a wonderful day!
I am going away.
Not to the circus, not to the zoo!
I am going to Oster School! Hurray!
We have had a “rockin” week in Kindergarten this week! Our class is getting settled in our routines and making new friends. All seem to be adjusting well.
We played “Higglety, Pigglety,Bumble Bee, you can tell your name to me”; a game where we learned each other’s names and clapped our names in syllables.
-We have been reading a lot of “Pete the Cat” books, which are always a favorite and so much fun to read. We also made a “color” book of Pete’s shoes. Please have your child read the words to you as they put their finger under each word. It they are not reading yet, please read the words to them and model, putting your finger under the words. When they understand the procedure, they put their finger under the words as you read them. This is called “tracking” and is a beginning reading strategy.
-We drew a “Pete the Cat” directed drawing. They turned out so cute!
